Many of us get tummy ache on holiday

Lots of us can have tummy ache on holiday. Here’s some advice to identify the reason, and the suitable remedy or medicine:

Upper tummy ache, just below the breastbone suggests inflammation of the stomach lining. This can often happen with exuberant consumption of alcohol  or spicy food. Simple medications available are antacids (gavascon etc), proton pump inhibitors which decrease acid secretion in the stomach (eg omeprazome – aka Losec)

Central abdominal pain / bloating suggests irritable bowel, which may be relieved by antispasmodic medication such as Buscapan

Lower abdominal pain and problem opening bowels (pooing) suggest constipation and lack of fibre in the diet. It’s a common occurrence whilst holidaying. It can be exacerbated by dehydration. Can be relieved by short term use of laxatives, drinking more water and eating some fruit and veg!

And as with any medical symptom, if the symptoms persist or worsen significantly, please consult a doctor as soon as possible.

All of these medications are available in a pharmacy without a prescription, and pharmacists are very familiar with these common holiday ailments and will be able to give advice.
