Lots of people ask me about high blood pressure; when you come for a consultation it’s one of the standard tests that I will do for you. It is particularly essential at the moment as high blood pressure is linked to Covid19 morbidity and serious symptoms.

So what is it, and why is it important?

Blood pressure is, quite simply, the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood around your body. High blood pressure or hypertension, is when the force against your artery walls is too high.

High blood pressure can result from a number of issues; too much salt in your diet can cause high blood pressure as can certain diseases.

There are many risk factors for high blood pressure. Some risk factors, such as unhealthy lifestyle habits, can be changed – reducing  salt in your diet, stopping smoking and increasing physical exercise can all help moderate your blood pressure. However, other risk factors, such as age, family history and genetics, race and ethnicity, and gender, cannot be changed.

High blood pressure can lead to a variety of issues, some of which are life-threatening, and many of which will show no symptoms until they occur. As a result, it’s really important that we monitor your blood pressure on a regular basis to assess whether it is high. I won’t just take one measurement – we can all have increased blood pressure if we are stressed or excited, but hypertension is when the blood pressure is constantly high.

There are a number of things we can do to manage high blood pressure from medication to lifestyle changes, but ultimately it is essential that we regularly monitor your blood pressure.

The links between high blood pressure and Covid19 morbidity is clear, and worrying as blood pressure is a hidden killer.

Book in today for a consultation so we can look at your blood pressure and all of the rest of your health indicators. It’s my job to keep you as healthy as possible!
